HISD ~ November News

November 19, 2007

November has been a busy month at Hitchcock ISD.  Our girl’s UIL sports teams have moved from Volleyball to Basketball while the boys have completed the regular season and are headed for the playoffs. Their first game beyond district will be with Edna on November 16th in Friendswood.
At the board of trustees meeting on November 13th, two new faculty members were hired at the high school to fill vacancies.  Mrs. Kimmela Steed, a registered nurse, will be teaching Health Science Technology and Ms. Sonja Janysek will assume duties as a special education inclusion teacher. District and campus improvement plans were approved for the 2007-08 school year.  A “Highly Qualified” Teacher plan was also accepted.  The superintendent received directions from the board to make an offer on a piece of real estate for the newly planned elementary that will be proposed in the May Bond election.

Plans are set for the first of several town hall meetings to be held to inform the public of the need for additional campuses to accommodate the growth that Hitchcock will be experiencing over the next 5-15 years. The first meeting will be at the Galilee  Baptist Church on November 19th at 6:30 pm at 6609 Fairwood Street. It is evident by virtue of the demographic study that the board has requested this fall that our elementary population will more than double in this time frame.
To accomplish a two-fold goal, the board is also considering a new high school as that population is projected to increase beyond current capacity as well. The middle school would then be moved to the current high school location and the Crosby campus would be renovated to house central office and district personnel. If successful, this bond issue in May would put all students in the district in new or practically new facilities.

With the vision that “if we build them, they will come”, added emotional efforts focus on actively recruiting our own eligible students who attend neighboring district schools.  Our demonstrative goal is to ensure those parents and students, and the community that Hitchcock is emerging, and becoming “the school of “Choice”

The holiday season is quickly approaching. HISD will honor the Thanksgiving by designating November 21 – 23 as holidays. School resumes on November 26th and the fall semester will conclude on December 20th.  Teachers will have work day on December 21st and school will begin it’s second semester on Thursday, January 3rd.  The last board meeting of 2007 will be held on December 18th.  A happy holiday season to all
