Hitchcock DECA Goes To State Contest
March 03, 2008
Early Thursday morning, February 28th, Gerardo Alonso and John Guerra, both members of DECA at Hitchcock High School, along with Mrs. Hoff and Mr. Bass, headed for Corpus Christi, Texas for the State Career Development Conference and Contest. Gerardo Alonso competed in Retail Merchandising Series Event where he took a 100 question multiple choice test and participated in 2 problem solving role plays while being judged. John Guerra competed in Marketing Management and the Free Enterprise Open Event. Both students were voting delegates representing Hitchcock High School DECA at the annual Business Meeting to elect State Officers. Gerardo received a certificate for Outstanding Achievement because he received points in all areas that he competed in and was not denied any credits. The Hitchcock High School DECA Chapter received the Super Star Chapter Award and was honored with a certificate and recognition at the opening ceremony and in the Conference Agenda and Guide. We were also recognized at the same time for being a new chapter. Other certificates received were Gold Level Chapter Award for outstanding recruitment. The students were treated to a great Key Note Speaker, Jerry Schemmel the announcer for the Denver Nuggets. His message was an inspiration to students and advisors alike. “It’s not about reaching success, but the journey along the way.” Don’t forget God, Family, Friends and Co Workers along the way and enjoy the ride. Other fun events included a dance on board the USS Lexington. By Sunday, we were ready to get back to Hitchcock. We were sad that we were not continuing on to the International Contest but, quoting Gerardo Alonso, “The ride was fun while it lasted.” Hitchcock High School DECA would like to thank the Board of Trustees, Dr. Bergman, Mr. Dowdy, Pam Haygood, Kay Painter, Nadine Smith, Mr. Greineisen, and Mr. Bass and all that helped us make it as far as we did. I personally want to thank all the students who participated at the district and state level. They helped me learn so much and we will be back next year bigger and better!
