Spring brings many activities to school districts due to the busy nature of the school calendar. This year, Hitchcock ISD is definitely busy with all the student activities plus the attempt, on the part of the district, to plan for and conduct a bond election to put new facilities in place and to renovate existing facilities.
March is the first month of the annual administration of the TAKS testing. The greatest concentration of testing occurs in late April but some subject tests are given slightly earlier to allow for proper grading. The campuses have been actively preparing for these assessments by periodically taking benchmark tests to determine progress in the curriculum. Principals are reporting good results in some areas with much work to do in others. Parents are asked to see that their students receive adequate rest during times of testing to insure the best possible results.
This year our students
have excelled in athletics. Our football team and our boys
and girls basketball teams all won district titles. Many of
our athletes won all-district honors in the process. So far,
we have one athlete that has signed to play college football at
Blinn College in Brenham, Texas. Congratulations to Anthony
McClain. We have also had a group of students in their
Marketing extra-curricular organization that represented Hitchcock
I.S.D. very well at area and state conventions.
To
celebrate public school week, the elementary has slated a math and
science project for the week of March 10-14. To give the
students a practical application for their study, the campus will
host a fly-in by a helicopter on March 14th to study the mechanics
of flight and calculations for time and distance through the
air. Science classes from Crosby and the high school are
invited to join in the occasion.
The
Board of Trustees has been busy with routine business items and
with preparation to call for a May 10th bond election to
fund new schools. Bond committee meetings and town hall
meetings on November 19th and February 4th
have been the board’s focus in putting together information and
sharing it with the public. The decision was made and finalized on
March 3rd, at a special meeting of the Trustees, to call
for a bond election on May 10th for the purpose of
building a new elementary, a new high school, and improve existing
athletic facilities. Whether students will be housed in a new
school or an existing one, all Hitchcock students, at the
conclusion of these construction projects, will be in either new or
better facilities. It is planned that no portable classrooms
will be in use upon completion. A third and final town hall
meeting is being planned for April and a brochure is being printed
to announce the bond election and answer questions about the
construction and financing of the new schools.
