Stewart ~ Classes Are In Session
Students at Stewart Elementary are taking university-type courses and having a blast. Students attend two classes per day and the classes last three hours. Students were allowed to choose from courses such as Art Appreciation, History of Popular Music, Chess, Physics, World Geography, Theatre, Future Teachers of Hitchcock, Creative Journaling, Spanish, Arts and Crafts, Words Alive, Advanced Studies, Current Events, Public Speaking, Fundamentals of Basketball and several other courses.
All university courses are designed to teach/use math and reading skills through hands-on learning. If you walk down the Stewart hallways you will see students building castles out of cardboard, measuring the height of the bounce of a ball, giving a three-minute speech in front of peers, listening to Beatles songs and studying the lyrics, calculating their heart rate after a run and other exciting activities.
Parents have expressed their appreciation of the courses and teachers and students have commented on how fun the learning has been for the students. The Stewart Staff wants to show students how it will feel to go to college and get their degrees. The courses have also motivated the students to continue to learn towards the end of school. Attendance is high and trips to the nurse's office is down. Students continue to have homework and are tested on the course information- midterm format and all. Kids are having fun and they do not realize it is good for them as well!
