HISD ~ Active Shooter Drill
March 06, 2019
Dear Parent(s) or Guardian(s),
The safety and welfare of everyone at Hitchcock ISD is our highest priority. In the spirit of this, we practice safety drills throughout the year to ensure our staff know what to do in case of an emergency. In an effort to practice a more realistic drill, Hitchcock ISD Police Department officers with the assistance of Galveston Police Department’s tactical response commanders will be conducting a school wide active shooter drill at Hitchcock High School and Crosby Middle School during school hours on Tuesday, March 26, 2019. We will hold a student assembly prior to the drill to explain, in detail, what the drill consists of and what students should expect. Hopefully, this will help alleviate fears and cut down on any confusion that may occur.
The goal of this drill is to improve our ability to protect students, save lives, and reduce injuries. Our school has worked closely with local authorities, representatives, and other school districts to develop and implement new safety procedures. These practice drills allow us to evaluate our emergency operation plans and improve our response skills. They also teach the students where to go, what to do, and how to prepare themselves to mentally work through and survive a critical incident.
Teachers will help to navigate the students through the events of the drill, as they themselves were participants in a similar drill this past summer and now voice assuredness that these safety plans can be taught to students and implemented effectively.
Our number one goal, while practicing these important safety procedures is to ensure that all students feel safe. In order to teach skills to protect themselves and others, not only while at school but also in public places, we encourage participation from all whom are able. We will happily make accommodations for students with physical, mental, and emotional issues.
We will be holding a meeting on March 20, 2019 at 6:00pm in the Hitchcock High School cafeteria for parents or guardians who would like to know more about the drill and to answer any questions.
If you have any questions prior to the meeting, or need further information, please do not hesitate to call us at 409-316-6555.
