Attendance Matters
Attendance is a fundamental aspect of education, deeply impacting a student's academic success and future opportunities. State laws regarding attendance in public schools are designed to ensure that students receive consistent and quality education. In Hitchcock ISD, we recognize that regular attendance is crucial, as students who miss just two days a month can accumulate up to 20 missed days in a school year. This translates to a significant loss of instructional time—approximately 30 hours of math and 60 hours of reading and writing. Over the course of their academic career, this can amount to over a year of lost instruction, severely impacting their educational foundation.
Hitchcock ISD has faced challenges with chronic absenteeism in the past. For the 24-25 school year, we are committed to addressing this issue by strictly enforcing state attendance laws. We will consistently monitor attendance and take necessary actions to ensure compliance, including filing charges against chronically truant students and their guardians if required. Our goal is to foster a culture of accountability and commitment to education, as regular attendance is a key factor in a student's success and overall academic growth.
You can read the entire Student Code of Conduct by clicking on this link, however, we have taken the attendance portion out and summarized it on this page, and linked below, for parents and guardians to gain a better understanding of what is expected from our Hitchcock ISD families.
